What Do You Think Social Media Means?

Hi Guys!


Social media is a phrase that is used all the time, but do we really understand what we are saying when we say it? What about our kids? Do they understand what the phrase means? I feel it is important for us parents to understand the definition of social media and understand what your child thinks it means. Both parents and children might have a completely different idea of what social media means. How can we help our children know the effects of social media if we aren’t talking about the same thing?

Definition of Social Media

“Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.” Websters Dictionary

 “Interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and network.” Wikipedia

“Social media includes any of these features: Personal user accounts, profile pages, friends, followers, groups, hashtags, news feeds, personalization, notifications information updating, saving or posting, like buttons, comment sections, review, rating or voting systems.” Lifewire

Social Media

Social media can be defined as any website or application that allows people to communicate with each other. It can be by leaving a comment, pushing a like button, uploading a picture or video, or reviewing or rating something.  Pretty much anything that allows you to express yourself through interaction with an app or virtual network.

After researching many websites, these are the top 10 social media websites used today. Do you recognize any of them? How many of you use these? What about your kids?

WRAP UP  

To wrap things up, I think we didn't get a clear definition of what social media means from our children.  There were a lot of "I DON'T KNOWS!" If we are wanting to actively engage in our children's social media experience, it might be a good starting point to talk to them about what social media means.  Being able to communicate and understand each other will help with future discussions and concerns in the future.

Why We Care

WHY WE CARE? Have you often wondered why "WE" as parents care so much about the amount of time our kids are spending on social media and electronics and how much they are exposed to it on a daily basis? I think about this more than I want to. Being a mother to 5 awesome kids, I am constantly battling the type of social media my kids are viewing and alway questioning how much time is appropriate for them to spend on this kind of stuff.
